Each student enrolling in the Carlisle Area School District from another school in the state of Pennsylvania must present the “Certificate of Immunization” which was completed by his/her previous school nurse. The Department of Health regulations indicate that this certificate is to be hand carried by the parents when a student transfers from one school to another. It is the parents responsibility to secure this certificate from the students previous school of attendance and present it to the registrar at the time of registration. No student will be admitted unless he/she is in full compliance with the law.

Each student enrolling in the Carlisle Area School District from a school district outside the state of Pennsylvania must present his/her immunization records at the time of registration in the district. These records will be reviewed by the registrar who may give an unofficial indication of adequacy. The records will then be forwarded to the Head Nurse for official review.

Elementary students are not required to wear uniforms for gym class. The gym teachers ask that elementary students wear comfortable clothing and sneakers in order to participate.

Middle school and High school students are required to wear Kelly green shorts and a white t-shirt for gym. The t-shirts may not have any logos or writing on them.  During the cooler months (Fall & early Spring), the students are allowed to wear gray sweatshirts and sweatpants if needed.  For your convenience, you may order P.E. uniforms from the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) at the middle school.

Physicals are required for EVERY sport played at the Middle or High school level. These physicals MUST be obtained within 45 days of the start of the sport, and by a PA Physician...so don’t bother getting that sports physical BEFORE you leave your current duty station; you’ll just have to do it again here. Physicals are FREE and done on a first come first serve basis during two consecutive Thursdays at the High School McGowan Gym. Don’t forget to get a physical form at school registration. Physical forms are not always available during the physicals.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) has changed its requirements for participation in interscholastic athletics. The PIAA has instituted a new procedure whereby all student-athletes are mandated to have a Comprehensive Initial Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation (CIPPE) completed by an authorized medical examiner, which includes a licensed physician of medicine or osteopathic medicine, a certified registered nurse practitioner, a certified physician’s assistant or a school nurse practitioner. Please access the CASD Physical Procedure & CASD Physical Exam Schedule in order to find more detailed information.

The CASD does enforce a dress code for its students in all grades.

Carlisle Area School District
Dress Code

Carlisle Area School District Board policy states that pupils shall conform to the rules of the schools and be clean in person and dress.  Although hair styles and styles of clothing are matters of individual taste, building administrators may impose restrictions when grooming and/or attire cause a disruption of the educational process, create disorder, constitute a health/safety hazard or are immodest in any respect.

The CASD dress regulations are an effort to improve the educational setting and school environment which will contribute to greater student success in the classroom.

With this aim in mind, the following limitations shall apply:

The Carlisle Area School District (CASD) does offer a gifted and talented program to students in grades 3-12. The program is entitled ACT (Academically Challenging Topics). Students meet in small groups during the school day in order to explore, in depth, different topics of interest. Students must meet certain eligibility requirements in order to participate in this pull—out program.

Please note that your student may need to have further testing done in the state of Pennsylvania before being admitted into the program offered by the CASD.

Requirements for gifted in PA:

130 or greater IQ on an individually administered psychological evaluation (WISC IV) by a certified school psychologist or a 125-129 IQ with other criteria suggesting the student is gifted.

If the student does not achieve a 130+ IQ then additional screening (other criteria) would be needed to include using:
  1. Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test*
  2. Achievement Testing
  3. Parent Checklist
  4. Teacher Checklist
  5. Other Considerations as Appropriate on the Screening Matrix

* The Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test is only a screener (used as other criteria) and is not used as a psychological evaluation instrument.

If the student has a Gifted Individual Education Plan (GIEP) from another state, PA will accept that.

Please note:  We can do all of this in Carlisle, except that the psychologists do not normally work over the summer.  There may be a delay if we have to do the testing in September.  If you have all this done privately, then we can move very quickly to make a determination of eligibility for gifted programs.

It is important that you register your child for school upon arrival to the Carlisle area. Your online registration before your arrival is a PRE-registration for school only. Your child will be assigned to a school before school begins in late August. School assignments are made by looking at the numbers in each elementary school at each grade level serving Post (Bellaire, Hamilton, Letort) and by looking at the neighborhood dynamics on Post. The district makes every attempt to keep neighborhood children together.

There are some unique features to your child’s education in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Education may have different requirements than the ones your child may have had at a previous installation. Please access the Carlisle Area School District website at www.carlisleschools.org; click on Carlisle High School; click on the Educational Planning Guide.

A written note is required from the parents if the student is absent from school; is leaving school early; or arrived at school late. A complete guide to attendance regulations may be found on the CASD website at www.carlisleschools.org
