Youth Lab

Carlisle Barracks Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) programs support the Army Family Covenant by reducing the conflict between a Soldier's mission requirements and his or her parental responsibilities. See a brief description below for each of our program areas; you may click the text in each program to go directly to that program.

Our goals are to:

Facilitate family self-reliance and reinforce Army values.
Ensure availability of predictable programs and services for eligible children and youth from four weeks to 18 years.
Maintain affordability of child and youth programs for both patrons and the Army through researching metrics, operational efficiencies, and seamless service delivery.
Establish and sustain CYSS program quality as a "benchmark for the nation" in accordance with statutory requirements, DOD, and Army standards.

Moore Child Development Center
(Ages 6 weeks - 5 years/Pre-K) Our on-post child care center offers full-day and part-day Pre-K and hourly care for children in a rich and stimulating environment.
School Age Services (SAS)
(Kindergarten - 5th grade) Our SAS program provides before and after school programs, summer care, and care during school vacations. Programs offer a wide range of physical activities, arts & crafts, homework assistance, character building, 4H and Boys and Girls Clubs, field trips, and more.
Middle School and Teens
(6th -12th grade) The Middle School and Teens programs at Carlisle Barracks are designed specifically to foster development, life skills, citizenship and leadership, companionship and teamwork, recreation and arts. Programs include mentoring, homework assistance, counseling and more.
Family Child Care (FCC) Homes
(Ages 4 weeks - 10 years) Family Child Care Homes are available on post from trained childcare providers that work as independent contractors for CYSS. FCC Homes provide full-day, part-day and hourly care for children in a home environment.

School Liaison Services
(All Ages) School Support Initiatives provides a variety of programmatic strategies and resources that the Army has undertaken to help "level the playing field" for transitioning military students, including school-age Exceptional Family Members.
Youth Sports & Fitness Programs
(Ages 3 - 18 years) Offers developmentally appropriate opportunities for children and youth to be engaged in individual and team sports, competitions, skill building clinics, and nutrition and health classes that foster development of life-long health habits. Provided by trained CYSS employees and volunteer coaches in a variety of settings including youth centers, MWR facilities, schools, community fields and facilities.
SKIESUnlimited
(Ages 3 - 18 years/high school seniors) We offer a wide range of out of school classes, e.g. music, dance, martial arts, gymnastics, technology, life skills, and SAT prep designed to complement, expand, and support the academic, life skills, and athletic experiences children and youth have within Army CYSS programs and schools. Provided by CYSS employees and contract instructors in a variety of settings which may include Child Development Centers, School Age Programs, MWR and Community Facilities, and Schools.

Acceditation/Certification

DoD Certification and National Accreditation are required by the Military Child Care Act to attain and ensure CYSS program quality.

Accreditation: Child Development Centers, School-Age Programs and FCC homes are eligible for National Accreditation through an external evaluation process that surpass expectations and provide high quality care for children.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children is the accrediting body for Army CYSS Child Development Centers.

The National AfterSchool Association is the accrediting body for Army CYSS School Age programs.

The National Association for Family Child Care is the accrediting body for Army CYSS FCC homes.

Certification: DoD Certification, the equivalent of state licensing, is based on an Army internal evaluation process to ensure Army CYSS Child Development Centers, Family Child Care Homes and School-Age Programs meet required DoD quality standards. All caregivers must meet rigid training, health and safety standards, and are subject to unannounced inspections.
